Reuben, the son of Phil, went missing in Alishan, Taiwan. Despite seeking help from the New Zealand government, Phil decided to travel to Taiwan himself to search for his son. He made a big splash in the media, even barging into the office of President to plead his case. Eventually, he was assigned a search and rescue team to assist him, and his daughter came to Taiwan to support him. Thus began an unexpected journey.

Due to a childhood incident, Shana had extreme distrust towards her father and opposed him at every turn. Larry, the captain of the search and rescue team, was not very proactive and had already determined that Reuben was deceased. The constantly changing weather and potential forest crises in Alishan kept battering Phil, and even after many days, the search and rescue had made no progress, leaving Phil on the verge of collapse.

After several weeks of unsuccessful searching, Larry announced that he was giving up the search, and Shana expressed her desire to return to New Zealand to be with her mother. During the second search, with the addition of civilian support, the previously depleted search and rescue funds were replenished, and the team was touched by Phil’s perseverance.
